• Question: As you work 24/7, do you get enough sleep? I need this for my future engineer plan. How much do you earn for all your work?

      Hi there!
I am on call 24/7, but only for one week out of three. When the machine was new and we were still making it work properly i was called out quite a lot in the night to fix things but now it only happens a couple of times a year. Even so it can sometime be at the most inconvinient time and i still have to go but this has only happened a handfull of times on the last seven years.
I still get plenty of sleep and fun!
The money is getting better all of the time as the country wakes up to the fact that we desperately need engineers and scientist to keep up with the rest of the world!

      Hi all!
It is nice how many students hooked up to this question :).

We do not work 24/7. I work 8hrs a day for 5 days a week. I love my job, so when I get some free time, then I do some work. I am just having pleasure, so it maybe a bit more than 8hrs for 5 days but it is amazing. I fell that I am changing the world, so I do not mind. On the other hand, I do get to do a lot of sports and meeting friends in my spare time 🙂

      Dear Curry lover Tom, F Monneeey Maaan 0161, 628kvnc34, 899kvnc34, 667kvnc34, 658kvnc34, 686kvnc34, 451kvnc34, 907kvnc34, 746kvnc34, 487kvnc22, ;-), 108kvnc22, 315kvnc22 and Cyborg,

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I do not work 24 hours and 7 days a week. I do get enough sleep so that I feel refresh and motivated at work. Apart from work, I still have time to cook, play piano, meeting friends and travelling.

Engineers can earn from about £24k per year.

Hi, I don’t work 24/7, I work a 37.5 hour week spread across 5 days. I think it is really important to balance work with a life outside, so I try to leave work at a reasonable time to go to the gym, cook dinner and spend time with my family.

Starting salaries for graduate engineers can start around £24-28K however this will go up as you progress through your career and get more experience. I believe that the average salary for engineers is one of the top in the country, in fact a report by the Guardian last year, had Rail engineers ranked 9th best paid by average salary in the UK, above lawyers!(http://www.theguardian.com/money/2014/nov/28/highest-paid-jobs-2014)
